The 8 Most Common Questions About What Causes Infertility

We have had some interesting questions posed about the causes of infertility.  We decided to go ahead and compile them all here with the answers and the explanations for the cause of the infertility.

1. Can Ovarian Cysts Cause Infertility?

Yes.  Ovarian cysts are interesting because they form because of a problem with the reproductive system and then continue to cause problems with your reproductive system once they form.  They are kind of like an oyster with their pearls.  They form around problems as a natural solution, and then cause more problems.  If you have had chronic ovarian cysts, then you will want to disclose your hopes for pregnancy with your doctor to see if there is a way they can pop these cysts and keep them from forming.

2. Can Abortion Cause Infertility?

Not usually.  Many women have endured abortions and still gestated healthy full-term babies.  In fact, the only way a prior abortion can cause infertility is if it was done wrong or if there were complications with the abortion procedure.

3. Can HPV Cause Infertility?

No.  While HPV is a very common STD, it is not one that generally interferes with later reproduction systems.  If you are worried about HPV causing infertility, then it would be wise to first take a look at some of the other common causes of infertility as they are much more likely to cause infertility than HPV.

4. How Does Endometriosis Cause Infertility?

It is common knowledge that endometriosis is one of the most common secondary infertility causes.  If it is working in tandem with any other infertility cause, it can make it very difficult to ever conceive.  Why is that?  Endometriosis is very hard on the uterus, which just happens to be where eggs are laid to create a baby.  With the harsh conditions placed on the uterus by endometriosis, it can be hard for fertility to occur.  It is not impossible to conceive with endometriosis, but it does make it hard, and often very painful.

5. Can Chlamydia Cause Infertility?

Yes- but only if left untreated.  If you catch this STD early on, then there should be no lasting effects.  If, however, it goes untreated, it can have terrible effects on the fallopian tubes which can make it rather hard for fertility to occur.

6. Can Herpes Cause Infertility?

No.  Herpes is an STD that causes many problems in your health, but keeping you from conceiving is not one of those.  You will, however want to be sure that you have no current outbreaks of herpes when you are actively trying for a baby.

7. Does Endometriosis Cause Infertility?

Yes.  In fact, this is one of the most common cause of infertility.  Endometriosis is harsh on every part of a woman’s reproductive system on top of being terribly painful.

8. Can Irregular Periods Cause Infertility?

This is an interesting question.  The truth is no, irregular periods cannot cause infertility, but they can be a symptom of a condition that can cause infertility.  To sum up- irregular periods do not cause infertility, but they are definitely a sign of infertility.
