With the huge increase of drones and quadcopters less commonly known as UAV’s (unamnned aerial vehicles), there’s need for a primer like this that will help you with safely flying your drone.
Depending on where you’re flying, if it’s not a big open space it may not be as straightforward as firing up the copter and flying.
Here are our tips for safely flying a drone or quadcopter – and of course having fun in the process!
How to Safely Fly a Drone/Quadcopter
1. The absolute, number one first step to flying a drone safely is to check the regulations in your city, country, etc. – you don’t want to be illegally flying a drone and get into trouble!
There may be requirements for registration, insurance, and other notifications to follow. Only after you confirm this should you proceed with actually flying!
2. Get familiar with the controls
Before flying the drone, you should be familiar with what the controls do, the parts on your drone, and you should be comfortable setting it up.
3. Make sure you’re in a safe and controlled space
If you’re using a smaller drone it’s ideal to fly inside, however if the drone is larger then you’ll need to fly outside. If you’re flying a drone outside make sure you’re allowed to, and not on private property. Also be sure that there’s no one around who could be injured/distracted by a drone.
4. Never fly near an airway, airport, or military buildings.
This is self-explanatory – airways need to monitor the air, and no unidentified or unauthorized vehicles are allowed in the air. This is a great way to get your drone taken away!
5. Don’t fly recklessly
So you’re ready to fly, familiar with the controls, and in a space place. Practice flying the drone and hovering, flying in small circles, and eventually expanding your movement. As you gain more experience you can fly faster and do more maneuvers but in the beginning you should be learning safely.
6. Know your drones range
You should be very aware of how far away you can fly your drone before it loses reception. If you were flying your drone at a high speed and lost connection it could crash into the ground and break, or worse crash into someone walking, driving etc.
Being aware of your drones range and staying within it will avoid this potential disaster.
7. Know your drones battery life and monitor it
Similar to the drone reception range, you want to know how long the battery will last before shutting off. If you were high up in the air or traveling quickly and it died it could create a similar situation to the described one above.
8. Avoid crashes
Crashes are both dangerous to the drone and anyone in the immediate flying area. Avoid crashing at all costs, if you do crash then not any damage and do not fly a damaged drone.
9. Never fly a damaged drone
Damaged drones can be hard to control and also more parts can break if one is damaged say for example one of the propellers was broken it could burn out the other ones. Make sure your drone is in good shape before flying it.
